Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) staff is providing youth with a creative platform to share their perspectives on teen health issues. Spokane Teen Videofest challenges Spokane County youth (ages 14-19) to speak out—through short videos with positive health messages—on topics most important to youth today. The sexual and reproductive health of our youth is a critical issue in our community that requires our attention.

Teen Videofest, dubbed a model practice by the National Association of County and City Health Officials, engages youth to create short videos with strong health promotion messages. These videos are then utilized in settings such as local schools, youth-focused organizations and broadcast television to encourage positive behavior change among viewers.

Not according to a recent, local survey conducted with Spokane teens. The survey showed that 43% of Spokane teens are sexually active. That means that more than half of teens in Spokane have chosen NOT to have sex! Sexual health is an important issue facing local youth, and we need YOUR help educating other teens about being sexually healthy and responsible.

Where do young people get information about sex from? Most people think youth would say from their friends or peers. According to a local survey conducted with Spokane youth, teens say they get information regarding sex and sexual activity from their parents (32%). Forty six percent of these Spokane youth agree that information about sex and sexual activity provided within their family was very adequate.

World AIDS Day 2009 theme is “Universal Access and Human Rights.” Global leaders have pledged to work towards HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment for all people, recognizing these as basic human rights. Although much progress has been made in increasing access to HIV/AIDS services, commitment around the world must be made if the goal is to be achieved. Millions of people continue to be infected with HIV every year.

With the start of a new year, and a new decade, many teens tend to look back over the last year and think about what changes they would like to make for 2010.  Whether it be making an effort to spend more time with family, deciding to eat healthier snacks after school, or maybe taking up a new sport or extra-curricular activity, now is the perfect time to make health your New Year’s resolution...
