Do you talk to your parent(s) or guardian about sex or feel comfortable asking them questions? October would be a good time to start or continue talking with them. October is national “Let’s Talk” month. Advocates For Youth, a national youth organization, encourages parent/child communication about sexuality. So, take the first step and start the conversation or continue asking questions.
Four things you can do to have a comfortable conversation with your parent(s) or another trusted adult:
Ask questions! Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Asking lets them know that you trust their information and you trust them.
Use a tv show, a scene from a movie you have both seen recently, or a magazine article as a starting point.
Ask how things were when they were your age and how did they deal with all the information and pressures about sex.
Reassure your parent(s) that just because you’re are asking does not mean that you are having sex.
